Polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids are often consumed in insufficient amounts. The omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) cannot be synthesized by the body if the appropriate precursors are not present.
